Cast Thermoset Urethane (CPU) vs TPU Golf Ball Covers

Both our 3-piece and 4-piece urethane programs use a cast thermoset polyurethane (CPU) cover. CPU is formed by pouring liquid polyurethane components into a mold and allowing them to cure through a chemical reaction. The result is a thermoset polymer that does not remelt under heat. TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is formed by injection-molding pellets under heat and pressure; it can be remelted and reshaped.

Key process differences: CPU requires a dedicated casting line with precise temperature and catalyst control. TPU can be processed on standard injection-molding equipment. CPU produces a softer, more conformable cover with a distinct feel; TPU produces a harder, more consistent cover with lower manufacturing variability. Neither material is inherently superior — the right choice depends on the product specification and target market.

What CPU can and cannot prove: Using a CPU cover confirms the manufacturing process and material category. It does not, by itself, establish a specific hardness, spin rate, feel score, or durability rating. Performance claims require SKU-specific test data, not material category alone.
