How Golf Ball Logo Printing Works

The standard method for printing logos on golf balls is pad printing (also called tampo printing). A silicone pad picks up ink from an etched steel plate (the "cliché") and transfers it onto the curved surface of the ball. This process allows precise, detailed printing on the ball's curved surface with excellent color consistency across large production runs.

For premium balls with urethane covers, a slightly different process is used: the logo is printed before the urethane cover is applied, so the design is essentially embedded in the cover for maximum durability. For Surlyn-cover balls, printing is applied after the cover is formed and cured.

File Format Requirements

To produce a high-quality logo print, we need your artwork in the right format. Here's what works best:

• AI (Adobe Illustrator) — preferred format, vector-based, scalable without quality loss
• EPS — vector format, works well for most designs
• PDF (vector) — acceptable if created from vector source
• PNG at 300+ DPI — acceptable for simple logos, but vector is always better
• JPEG — generally not recommended due to compression artifacts
• Pantone color codes — provide these if brand color accuracy is critical

If you only have a low-resolution logo (from a website or social media), our design team can recreate it as a vector file for a small fee (typically quoted based on complexity). This is a worthwhile investment that ensures your logo prints cleanly and can be reused for all future orders.

Color Options and Pantone Matching

Golf ball printing uses spot colors (not CMYK process printing). Each color in your design requires a separate steel plate and a separate pass through the printing machine. This means:

• 1-color designs: simplest and most cost-effective
• 2-color designs: very common for logos with a primary color and black/white
• 3-color designs: achievable, slightly higher cost and setup time
• 4-color designs: maximum complexity, best for detailed logos with multiple brand colors
• Gradients and photographic images: NOT possible with pad printing — these must be simplified to solid colors
• White printing: available on colored balls (e.g., yellow, orange, red balls)

Quality Control for Logo Printing

Logo print quality is one of the most common concerns for first-time buyers. At MetaSeal Golf, our QC process for logo printing includes:

1. Pre-production sample: we produce 12–24 sample balls with your logo before bulk production begins. You approve the sample before we proceed.
2. Color verification: we compare printed colors against your Pantone reference and adjust ink formulation if needed.
3. Print registration check: we verify that multi-color designs are properly aligned (registration tolerance: ±0.3mm).
4. Adhesion test: printed balls are subjected to an adhesion test to ensure the logo won't peel or fade under normal play conditions.
5. Pre-shipment inspection: a random sample of the bulk production is inspected for print quality, consistency, and defects before shipment.

Common Logo Printing Mistakes to Avoid

• Submitting low-resolution raster files — always use vector formats for best results
• Designing with gradients or photographic elements — these cannot be reproduced with pad printing
• Expecting exact color matches without providing Pantone codes — always specify Pantone colors for brand-critical work
• Skipping the sample step — always order and approve a sample before bulk production
• Designing logos that are too small or have very fine details — minimum line width for reliable printing is approximately 0.5mm
